5 Things to Consider When Purchasing a Light Box

In the retail environment, light boxes have become a great way to not only enhance foot traffic but to also create and augment the shop-in-shop, store-within-a-store, and concession area experience.  Light boxes are not merely trendy, they really do make a difference in gaining the attention of your customers whether it be in the retail environment, at a trade show, or even with general signage uses. Light boxes add vitality to your visual communications efforts and can boost your overall communication strategy effectiveness. With that in mind, we thought we could offer a primer on things to think about before implementing light boxes into the mix. So, here are five things to consider when you are planning to purchase light boxes:

1. Where will the light box be located?

Though it is most common to see light boxes mounted to the wall, you should consider if it is it best to wall mount the light box which usually indicates a fixed, more permanent location, or if you should investigate hanging it from the ceiling or finding strategic floor space for it where it can be seen and easily relocated based on your changing retail requirements or show needs.

2. How do you want the light box to look?

Some lightbox frames are nearly non-existent. Others have a more traditional frame look and create a border for your message. Which do you prefer? Does the framing even matter to you or are you more concerned about your graphics drawing the attention? Do you want a transparency or would you rather have the warmer, more luxurious look of a quick-change and easy maintenance fabric SEG (Silicone Edge Graphic)? Do you prefer a single or double sided backlit light box?

3. How much and what type of illumination does the light box need?

With light boxes, you need to understand a number of internal factors will affect how your light box appears from the outside. Decide between edge lit light boxes and ones that are backlit. Choose between fluorescent bulbs and LEDs. LEDs are typically more energy efficient and cooler than the former. You want to be sure there is a uniform light distribution without hot spots which affect the light box’s overall appearance. Is the box bright enough? Inquire about the ability to add additional LED strips inside the light box.

 4. Will the light box be easy to install or will I need contracted labor?

With the variety of size, framing and location factors that light boxes allow, you should plan how you will get the unit installed and shining in your environment. Is the light box unit heavy? Will you need to hire someone to come to my site to install it?  Does it ship ready to hang or is assembly required? For some larger light boxes, it may actually be advantageous to be able to ship the unit unassembled as it will save in shipping and could make installation simpler and less unwieldy.

5. Does the light box meet all safety requirements?

To avoid wasting time and money, and to save you from unneeded frustration, be sure the component parts of the light boxes you select are UL listed and are compliant with all current federal, state and local safety standards.
